Just looked through our little community on Orkut (thanks Praveen!) and found that there were still some questions about the name ‘Thermal And A Quarter’. So we thought we’d put all these niggling uncertainties to rest with our greatest exposition of the mystery behind our brand.
Here goes.
In a far, distant future, circa 2123, mankind has finally resolved the eon-old gripe of achieving ‘world peace’ – that frequently overused double hit that tumbles from the painted pretty mouths of dead-eyed, big-grinned misses universe. The solution, it was found, was relatively simple: make EVERYONE equal. And this idea of equality is an absolute – all human beings must be completely equal, in ability, opportunity, aspiration, love, intelligence, and so on.
How is this accomplished? One – but establishing a global ‘mean’ that EVERYONE conforms to. Two – by devising ways to augment lack and inhibit excess. What does this mean?
a) everyone has the same physical abilities – if someone is stronger/weaker, he/she is given special treatment to boost/reduce physical characteristics to conform to the GLOBAL MEAN.
b) everyone has the same intelligence level – if someone is smarter/intellectually challenged, he/she is surgically implanted with cutting-edge electronics that can either augment the thought process, or introduce random ‘noise’ to prevent the formation of above-mean ideas ad thoughts
c) everyone has the same opportunities
… and so on.
So this begs the question – what is this ‘GLOBAL MEAN’? How is it calculated?
The answer, when it came, was simple.
For Matrix lovers, this will sound familiar: the human body is a jumble of electricity and warmth. Since alteration of basic characteristics will invariably alter this soupy confabulation of things that make needles jump on a graph, it was necessary to doctor the alteration so that the eventual result left every human with the same ‘output’.
The so-called global mean, after much deliberation, was measured in a special, never-before-used unit. This unit was the ‘THERMAL’ (One thermal, two thermals, etc). And in order to ensure that everyone had just the right amount of everything, the global mean was calculated to the order of one-and-a-quarter THERMALS.
So there you have it – THERMAL AND A QUARTER.
Makes sense now?
